Gratitude is our ability to see the grace of God, morning by morning, no matter what else greets us in the course of the day. ~ Rev. Dr. M. Craig Barnes, President of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary
Staying aware of what I have, even in the middle of circumstances that feel like I’m losing everything, that is the gift of gratitude. Because there is little in life that’s more likely to cause my soul to shrivel up in a ball than the knowledge that I’m losing something dear. But the truth is, even in those times, there are still things to be thankful for. I’m not talking about making up something to be thankful for as a way of avoiding feeling the pain of loss. Loss hurts. Avoiding that knowledge won’t make it hurt less. Gratitude is the balancing influence that helps keep my soul from being overwhelmed.
Today is Day 6 of 31 Days of Soul Tending and the focus is practicing gratitude. I’m reminding myself that every day brings something to be thankful for. Today I’m thankful for a warm place to live as the days are beginning to turn chilly. I’m thankful for the warmth of friends and family who care about me. What are you thankful for today?
