We write, we make music, we draw pictures, because we are listening for meaning, feeling for healing. ~ Madeleine L’Engle, Walking on Water
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Generally when I’ve heard that phrase, it hasn’t meant anything positive. You know that way we have of trying to be polite and at the same time shaking our heads over someone’s inability to recognize that there really isn’t any beauty there?
Recently someone shared with me the reminder that we all have the potential to make beautiful things. I would amend that just a bit to say we all have the potential to create beauty. We were meant to reflect the image of the Creator, but I think we’re held up by the fear that what we create will not be seen as beautiful by others. I know I am many times. There are so many critical voices surrounding us, and criticism has always come too easily. I have to relearn the lesson again and again and again that, regardless of what anyone else thinks, if I see beauty in what I’ve created, then it’s beautiful.
If Madeleine L’Engle is correct, and I think she is, that we create to find meaning and healing in our lives, think about what opportunities we are giving up when we stop creating out of the fear that we’ll be the only ones to see beauty in our creations. When I sit down at the piano, I’m the first to recognize that my abilities are limited. Like I said, criticism comes too easily. But that’s not why I play, I play because I enjoy creating the music. The same is true when I begin writing a new story, or I create a new recipe, or I find a new plant to add to the garden. And when I recapture my understanding that what I create is beautiful, then I can truly begin to celebrate that beauty.
This is Day 23 of 31 Days of Soul Tending and the focus is nurturing my senses by experiencing and celebrating all kinds of beauty, in this case the beauty of what I create. My encouragement for you today is to take a fresh look at what you enjoy creating, with your eyes open to see its beauty, and let that rediscovered beauty nourish your soul.
