He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul. ~ David, the Psalmist
He restores my soul…some translations say he refreshes my soul…
Have you ever thought about the fact that “rest” and “restoration” share the same root? Entering rest isn’t defined as laying in a hammock all day, or planting myself in a chair and holding perfectly still. Frankly neither of those activities is particularly restful or refreshing to my soul.
Rest is about finding those things that are restorative for my soul. For some people, that may be taking a long bike ride, for others it may mean spending the afternoon in the garden, still others are most refreshed by playing or listening to music. It’s specific to the individual and part of each person’s journey to discover the activities and environments that are most refreshing to their soul.
Today is Day 18 of 31 Days of Soul Tending and the focus is entering rest. I’m reminding myself that rest doesn’t mean inactivity, but instead is about refreshing and restoring my soul. Music is my soul restoring choice for today.
