The space where we find rest and healing for our souls is solitude. ~ John Ortberg, Soul Keeping
Solitude is the space where I get to just be. No role to play. No appearance to keep up. No expectations to meet….even my own. My soul can take a deep breath and regain its balance.
I love the visual of this photo. The columns and the designs in the ceiling and floor all work together to draw the eye into what appears to be an unending space. Solitude is something like that, drawing my soul into an unending amount of space. In solitude my soul can scream out in frustration or anger or sorrow with no need to be concerned about disturbing the neighbours. In solitude my soul can sing out in joy or excitement or giddy happiness with no need to be concerned about whether anyone thinks I look foolish.
This is Day 29 of 31 Days of Soul Tending and the focus is embracing solitude, providing space for contemplation and meditating with God. I’m reminding myself that solitude doesn’t mean isolation. Whether it’s taking a bike ride, or a walk through the neighbourhood, or a few minutes behind the closed door of the bedroom (or even the bathroom), the important thing is not where the space is but deciding to set a boundary and provide myself with a few moments of uninterrupted time.
